Project description
Eco hotel in the Azores
On the volcanic island of Pico, in the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage landscape, one of Europe's most poetic regenerative projects is emerging. A living temple, a place where the earth speaks and where people learn to listen again. On over two hectares of lava soil, molded by wind and sea, an ensemble of eco-retreat, fermentation brewery, food forest, and guild workshop is rising, where ancient crafts and modern ecology embrace.
Whoever arrives here lands at a place that opts for simplicity, reverence, and regeneration. A minimalist hotel with some twenty rooms, a terroir bistro, a wine cellar, and a spontaneous fermentation brewery.
The commensalist is responsible for the landscape, the biodiverse food forest, the permaculture garden, and the ecological integration of the entire estate.
Topic: Sources
We were inspired by the theme "source". Not only the water sources that feed the island, but also the sources of knowledge, craftsmanship, and nourishment that once seemed to be lost. Guests come to drink from these sources — to return to their own world recharged.
Food forest on lava soil
On the barren volcanic soil, we are designing a densely planted food jungle where more than a hundred edible species coexist according to syntropic principles. We are bringing historical cultivation methods back to the landscape. We build up the soil with compost, soil life recovers, and abundance grows from the barrenness.
Native wind buffers
Against the salty sea wind, we weave strategic belts of Erica azorica and Morella faya — species that have stood here for millennia and embrace the domain like a natural coat.
Water as a living being
Grey water is filtered by a constructed wetland filter and flows into natural ponds with gentle waterfalls. Water moves, breathes, splashes, and sings through the estate.
Guilds
A living laboratory for regeneration, where the local community shares in both knowledge and the harvest.
